Italian summer bites

It is extremely hot these days in Italy, with read alert in 18 cities today, temperatures are close to 40C, hence you are advised to hydrate yourselves, eat light and avoid taking walks in the hottest hours of the day. Normally you shouold also change your diet and luckily Italy’s cuisine offers delicious plates also for the heat emergency.

  1. Melone e prosciutto

as simple as can be. Thick melon pieces covered with slices of Parma ham with a bit of olive oil. Favourite antipasto of Italians that can be easily found everywhere in the country.

2. Caponata

This dish is coming from Sicily and it is mostly like a ratatouille made of  aubergines, tomatoes, raisins, capers and pine nuts. You can eat it either hot or cold, during the summer his lattest version will save your lunch. The recipe of the caponata can be found here.


3. Caprese salad

Caprese salad is  a typical Italian summer food that got its name after the island of Capri. Super easy to prepare, you only need good quality tomatoes, mozzarella and basil. You cut into slice tomatoes and mozzarella and, put some basil and olive oil on them and enjoy.


4. Spaghetti alle vonghole

Even if it’s summer and we try to eat light, we can’t avoid pasta. Spaghetti alle vongole is spaghetti with claims, cooked in white wine. Perfect!

5.  Zucchini blossoms

Genuine Italian summer food, zucchini blossoms can be found on pizza, or simply deep fried and they are delicious. You will most probably find it in Rome.


6. Granita

Granita, just like caponata was born in Sicily and it is halfway between food and drink, ice cream and sorbet. According to legends, the locals originally ate the snow coming from Mount Etna with lemon.  The most traditional tase also today is lemon, ut you can find it in endless variations, fruity and not (mint, coffee, chocolate). Professionals have it for breakfast with brioches.

Affogato unites two Italian excellencies: coffee and ice cream, it is practically vanilla ice cream with coffee espresso  satisfying either our wish for coffeine or for sweet..


8. Crema di caffé

My personal favourite.  Creamy, ice cold, close to ice cream, but less dense, summer cofee, ideal on the beach.

9. Almond milk

Alternative milk manufactured of alonds, you can buy it in every supermarket and it will save your lives fresh out of the fridge.
